Advanced Micro Devices

AMD

A semiconductor company and NVIDIA's primary competitor in the data-center GPU market, with Instinct-series accelerators that have gained meaningful but not dominant share.

Advanced Micro Devices is a semiconductor company founded in 1969 and NVIDIA's primary competitor in data-center GPUs. AMD's Instinct MI-series accelerators (MI250X, MI300X, MI325X) offer competitive performance at frontier scale on specific workloads but lack the software ecosystem (CUDA) that keeps NVIDIA dominant for general-purpose AI compute.

AMD's strategic position in AI has strengthened through 2024-2026. MI300X deployments at major cloud providers (Microsoft Azure, AWS, Oracle), combined with ROCm software maturation, have produced a viable alternative for customers willing to absorb the porting cost. Meta's large-scale deployment of MI-series GPUs for some internal inference workloads is the single most visible proof point.

For enterprise buyers, AMD's main appeal is pricing leverage. Even organizations that stay on NVIDIA benefit from AMD's existence as a competitive floor. The structural CUDA lock-in remains real, but the gap is smaller in 2026 than it was in 2023, and narrowing.
